I'm always fascinated by the adorable Disney-inspired outfits I see girls wearing to Disneyland on Instagram. I've been following Melanie (@femmedebloom) since I joined Instagram and have purchased from her adorable Etsy shop a few times. I discovered Alyssa (@littlefantasmic) more recently and fell in love with her style. These ladies are both total sweethearts and I'm delighted they agreed to do a Q&A post for Lace & Whimsy. Read their interview below to learn a little more about the concept of "Disneybounding."
For my readers who aren't familiar with the term, could you please explain Disneybounding?
MELANIE: I'm definitely not an expert on this subject but from my perspective, Disneybounding is all about channeling a Disney character (or non-Disney character because people are doing that too now!) by wearing the same colors as the character or a similar style but in everyday clothing. It is NOT a costume and it should be something you'd wear regularly! Color blocking and matching is a big part of it.
ALYSSA: Disneybounding to me is dressing up as your favorite Disney characters but taking inspiration from other things as well. It's different for everyone and mine tend to be on the fancier side!
When putting together Disneybound ensembles, where do you tend to shop for clothing or accessories?
ALYSSA: I usually shop from Amazon, Ebay, Forever 21, and sometimes ModCloth for my Disneybound outfits. I try to work with what's in my closet to save money but it doesn't always work out that way. I also create things myself, I can't sew but I usually work around that.
MELANIE: So for clothing pretty much ANYWHERE, especially if it's affordable. I try to work with what is already in my closet, but I also thrift items (either in stores or on eBay/Poshmark) or buy from different shops online such as Unique Vintage, Doll Me Up, or Modcloth. I have also used Amazon for basics I need to complete an outfit (FREE PRIME SHIPPING, WOO!). As far as accessories....well I make them myself hehehe. FemmeDeBloom y'all, check it out! I do custom orders too! I do mostly jewelry and brooches so when I've needed hair accessories I've purchased goodies from Hat and Mouse, Le Petit Mouse, and ears from House of Mouse on Etsy!
Can you tell us about a few of your favorite outfits you've put together?
MELANIE: My all time favorite is my Donald bound that I put together for my 30th birthday. 1) Because he is my most favorite in the whole entire world! 2) I just loved how it came together! I also really enjoyed bounding as Princess Leia because I got these cute handmade yarn earmuffs that looked like her buns! Oh, and another favorite was my Mad Hatter bound!
ALYSSA: I did Ella from the live action version of Cinderella and it was super easy to create because all I needed was a blue tulle skirt and blue top. I just hot glued butterflies to the top. I also did "Winter Belle" which was easy as well because it was just a pink dress and I made the cape and of course wore a wig because I like to be a little extra sometimes. I also did a Rapunzel dress that I bought off Amazon and I just added the flowers to it and made a flower crown to match.
The Instagram community surrounding Disneybounding, Dapper Day, and Disney in general seems like such a fun, warm community. Can you tell us a little about that? Who are your favorite Disney ladies you follow?
ALYSSA: I have met so many amazing ladies through Disneybounding! It's so great to meet other like minded ladies that are creative and love dressing up! A couple of my favorites are @femmedebloom, @damfino, @queensavannah, @kellerzzzz, @missmonstermash, @foreverdisneybound, @jessbehappee and @the_freckled_princess to name a few!
MELANIE: It's definitely a very creative and inspiring community to be a part of! I especially love Dapper Day because everyone really goes all out. It's just great to see what people come up with! I've met some great friends through the Disneybounding community so I'm very fortunate! I've recently had the opportunity be involved in the Princess Squad group created by @partyonthedge where we have a bunch of girls who all bound as a different princess. I get to be Princess Jasmine and it's super fun! If I wrote all the handles of all the people who inspire me I think it would take a gazillion years! Some of my favorites off the top of my head are @missgolden_lady, @dazzlinglikejasmin, @foreverdisneybound, and so many more!!!
What Disney characters are on your to-do list for future outfits?
MELANIE: I definitely want to do Belle's blue dress because she's my fave and I can't believe I haven't done it yet! Others include Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Winnie the Pooh, BB-8, Genie from Aladdin, and Rapunzel!
ALYSSA: I actually have never bounded as Snow White which is crazy cause she is my favorite princess! Briar Rose, Evil Queen, Bianca from the Rescuers, any of the Aristocats, Miss Bunny, and Tinker Bell.
Anything else you'd like to add?
ALYSSA: I am so grateful to be apart of this amazing community! I always have so much and I love meeting new people that love it as well! You don't need a lot of money to come up with amazing outfits, Amazon and eBay have so much good stuff. I also would like to say that if dressing a certain way makes you happy, then just do it! It doesn't matter if other people don't like it, what matters is that you feel good!
MELANIE: Thank you to @leslieakay for creating such a wonderful way to celebrate our favorite characters! I think for me, Disneybounding has given me the opportunity to continue my love of dressing up and creating themed outfits, which I've loved to do since childhood. Going to Disneyland is ten times more fun since I've been bounding. It's also given me so many ideas for new accessories for my shop, which has been great!
